WHY FOOTBALL MATTERS:

  1.  Discipline and Time Managementthe rigorous schedule of practices, workouts, and team meetings requires student-athletes to develop strong time management skills.  Balancing academics, athletics, and personal life teaches them to prioritize tasks and build habits of discipline.  This discipline extends into their studies and later, into their careers and personal responsibilities.
  2. Teamwork and Leadershipfootball fosters a deep sense of camaraderie as it demands cooperation among players, regardless of their backgrounds or personal differences.  It pushes individuals to work cohesively toward a common goal.  Additionally, opportunities to lead whether as a captain or by setting an example in a drill help players develop leadership skills that inspire confidence and initiative in other areas of their lives.
  3. Resilience and perseverance –  Football’s physical and mental demands cultivate a sense of resilience. Players experience setbacks, whether in the form of tough losses or personal performance slumps. Learning to push through adversity teaches them that failure is not the end but a stepping stone toward growth and success.
  4. Respect and accountability –  Coaches emphasize respect for teammates, opponents, and the game itself. Football’s structure also requires players to be accountable for their roles and responsibilities, instilling a work ethic that carries over into their future jobs and relationships.

GRADUATE COWBOY FOOTBALL PLAYER QUOTES:

Football helped me in a lot of ways.  It helped me learn that determination will get you to new heights, and that your team can only be as good as your weakest link.  Football created bonds with my brothers that I will remember forever.

Football taught me the value of being a great teammate. Success comes from trusting those teammates, communicating clearly, and doing your job while helping others do theirs. That’s true on the field, in business, and even in family life (because let’s be real, parenting is the ultimate team sport). I learned to lead, listen, and support the people around me, whether that’s making sure a receiver knows the hot route or making sure my kids have what they need to thrive. Football wasn’t just a game; it was a crash course in working with others, and that’s helped shape who I am today.

I learned a lot from football. One of the things I learned was that nobody cares about the adversity you have to face. You have to overcome adversityIt doesn’t matter if it’s hot or cold or your head hurts, you still work hard and make it fun.

Football has a way of teaching resilience like nothing else. You take a hit, you get back up. You throw a pick, you shake it off and go win the next drive. Playing quarterback, I learned early on that things don’t always go as planned—defenders crash through the line, receivers run the wrong route, and sometimes, the ball just doesn’t bounce your way. But you don’t dwell on it. You adjust, learn, and move forward because the next play is always waiting. That mindset carried over into life. Whether it’s running a business, handling tough conversations, or balancing a million responsibilities as a dad, I know how to take a setback, recalibrate, and keep pushing forward.

Playing football for this program has been so good for me. It has taught me so much about rising up to the challenge and persevering through adversity. It has taught me about integrity and the importance of keeping your word.  Football taught me about being diligent in all aspects of life. It taught me about the importance of family, and what that means.  Most importantly, football taught me about hard work. Being a part of this program has taught me so many skills that translate to life, and it brought me from a boy to a young man ready to learn and grow. Football has meant everything to me and has helped me become a better person.

Football allowed me to make friends and have confidence to talk to other people more easily. I also feel like I was able to learn important life lessons of hard work and discipline because of our practices and schedule.  Football taught me that hard work pays off, and the value of success hard work brings.
